Sara Fox is a multi-disciplinary artist who draws inspiration from her immersion in materials and techniques. Through such experimentation, she can express her interpretation of the world. This understanding is a window into how she perceives and is influenced by her environment.
She was brought up in a country in a perpetual state of flux, creating uncertainty and unbalance. This feeling of tension is rooted deeply in her subconscious and has emerged as a critical theme in the materials and subjects that she chooses to work with. Her work is a reflection of her ever-changing circumstances and is her way of trying to unpick them. To mimic this she frequently uses different materials and techniques. Not only because of this but she feels strongly that each medium has its own particular set of qualities and abilities to carry information.
‘Each medium says something that cannot be uttered as well or as completely in any other tongue.’
John Dewey
She believes that a method of making shouldn’t be demeaned because of its origins, or humble beginnings; the work should be critiqued because of its intent and consequence. Everything leads to the realization that it is dialectical relationships that push her practice: high art vs craft, manmade vs natural, new vs old, modern techniques vs traditions, health vs illness, Belfast vs itself.
